Mary, Mother of God's Word

Why "Mother of the Word?"

Our Lady of Whitestone monastery looks to Mary especially as she is the mother of God’s Word.  Both St. Augustine and St. Leo the Great teach that Mary’s mental conception of Christ is greater than her bodily conception of Him.  The sum of Mary’s glory is found in these two conceptions and their implications.

The great enemy of man is fundamentally anti-conception.  He is the “father of lies,” and “father of death,” for he works to kill both the mental conceptions through which we attain truth and the bodily conceptions through which new souls are born.  In this he shows his enmity against the Woman and Her seed.  While his attack on the world is primarily through attacking bodily conception, his attack on the Church is primarily against mental conceptions.  He attacks the importance of words in our relationship with Christ.  Today especially we need Mary.  She teaches us how to avoid the devil's attacks and to find eternal life in Christ, the Word.

A monastery is a place to find life, and the perfection of supernatural life is found in Mary.  She conquers the devil and leads souls to her son: the Word, the Truth, and the Life.  She does this first with her mind, but also with her body.

The following essays explain the providential foundation of Whitestone Monastery.  They explain its purpose and life.  Most of all they explain Mary: the mother of Whitestone and the mother of the Word who is Life.
