In the 1400's, there were more Monasteries in Europe than there are Starbucks in the United States today.
Why so many monasteries? The history books credit the saints. You might read “St. Bernard founded X number of monasteries.” While this is true, it is not the whole picture. Behind every saint was a man of faith, who believed in the greatness of the work.
A Catholic ruler blessed with vast estates and enormous wealth would establish a monastery for his own spiritual good and that of his family and subjects. With one lump donation (equivalent to about $100 million today) he would establish a place of continual prayer and penance for the salvation of souls and the glory of God, for himself, for his family, and his kingdom.
Today, instead of one wealthy donor, monasteries are built by many Catholic souls, eager to rebuild the era of faith.
